Intro To ReKeying Locks

Re-keying locks is one of the most common tasks performed by locksmiths and a good understanding of the process is essential. Part of re-keying most locks requires the plug be removed and the pins changed to fit the new key. This locksmith training video demonstrates how to take the most common locks apart, remove the old pins, and re-pin them. This skill is a big money maker for locksmiths. The course includes 1 hour 53 minutes of video instruction.

  • 2.  List five types of information normally included on a pin kit chart.
  • 3.  List the steps for re-keying a Kwikset KIK lock.
  • 4.  List the steps for re-keying a Schlage deadbolt.
  • 5.  Describe the process for removing the lock cylinder from lock of at least four different mfg. 
  • 6.  Explain the basic process for disassembly of a cylindrical lock.
  • 7.  Explain that the Schlage A series wafer lock must be removed from the door to be rekeyed.
  • 8.  Describe the development of the modern pin tumbler lock.
  • 9.  List at least five different modern lock technologies and give the name of the inventor.
